Camino Diary: Walking The Camino Francais Day Eleven

DAY ELEVEN: 19 October 2012 from Logrono to VentosaIMAG0867
The old centre of Logrono is deadly quiet at 8am, slumbering under a dirty scruff cloud of a sky. I found a bar rubbing sleep from its eyes and grateful for the early start to trade. A shot of the unapologetically rough charm of Spanish Americano and I am charged to navigate the 21st Century mania of commerce through the pilgrim gate from the medieval quarter. There is a respite from the city at Pantano de la Grajera a resevoir lake and woodland created in 1883. Climbing to Alto de la Grajera the camino runs high along side the autopista. The high wire fence a tangible separator between soft footsteps of the pilgrim and the super charged highway of the 21st century traveller. The kilometres of wire an inspired backdrop for crosses of every shape and size, conjured up from all available materials, each one a manifestation of a personal wish; penitent prayer, soul memorial, a colourful creation, creative legacy. Each one an invitation for consciousness. It was a quiet thoughtful day, not one for lingering as the weather alternated between gushy spurts of fat rain drops and the sullen threatening of glowering sky.
